Every now and then the Internet giant surprises us with a new, fun way to interact with the search engine. The latest in the well-known Easter Eggs is called Zerg Rush. It’s a fun little game that you can even get highscores on!

Searching for the keywords “Zerg Rush” brings up the regular results page, but the links aren’t clickable. After the results appear, a host of red and gold Os (called zerglings) from the logo will drop down and start destroying the results. And it’s your duty to stop them. The game is, of course, a reference to Blizzard’s StarCraft. For those unfamiliar with the game, a “Zerg rush” is a tactic using the Zerg’s low cost and huge numbers to simply overwhelm the opponent.

Clicking on the pesky zerglings will destroy them. The more you destroy, the higher your score. They come from the bottom too, so watch out. Writing that sentence just made me think of the famous Buffy line “it eats you, starting with your bottom”. When the zerglings have finally managed to overcome you, you will be given the choice to post your score to your G+ page.

Google is, of course, well known for these little Easter Eggs.  Last December we got “Let it Snow” where searching for the phrase made snowflakes start falling which eventually covered the search results. Last year’s “Do A Barrel Roll” is a particular favourite, whereby searching makes the whole website rotate.

Other examples include searching for “askew”, “Chuck Norris”,  “recursion” – my favourite! – and for directions from “the Shire” to “Mordor” in Maps.

Kaboom!

That was the sound of your brain joysploding. Yes, joysploding. I said it and I’m not taking it back. If, like me, you’ve been waiting not 4 years, but rather your whole life for this movie then I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you won’t be disappointed.

It’s got it all, kids: awe-inspiring heroes, nasty villains, mind-blowing visuals, sexy ladies, sexy man ladies, Joss Whedon. It is, quite simply the summer blockbuster to end all summer blockbusters. But better than all that it proves to the likes of Michael Bay that you don’t have to be braindead to blow stuff up.

Too long we’ve settled for the idea that in order to make a big action movie that movie has to be stupid. Its audience has to be stupid enough to accept that action is stupid. Whatever happened to movies like Die Hard? Action used to be cool and clever. Well, never fear, our friendly neighbourhood Joss is here to set things right.

Avengers Assemble manages to balance action, humour, sexiness and all the other things an adventure should have. Loki returns to Earth to steal the Tesseract and take over the planet. Oh no. Whatever will we do? We’ll finally deliver on all the tiny teasing promises at the end of every Marvel Studios movie, that’s what we’ll do. With the backstory already taken care of by the other films, Avengers Assemble wastes no time in launching into full blown team mode.

It’s a hell of a team too. There’s not many movies that could put together a cast of Downey, Evans, Hemsworth, Johannsen, Ruffalo, Hiddleston, Jackson, Renner, Skarsgard etc. and keep the whole thing nicely balanced. Not to mention that the mixture of established and rising stars’ fees would put a dent in the debt of a small nation. All of the players are on top form. Each of them pitch perfect in roles that they seemed born to play. And thank heavens for Mark Ruffalo. Finally a Bruce Banner/Hulk Marvel can be proud of. Ladies, you’ll be pleased to hear that Ms. Romanov and Ms. Hill kick serious ass and don’t lose any of their clothes in the process. Yay, equality.

The bottom line is that whether you love movies, have a brain or have nothing to do and go to see it because everyone keeps talking about it Avengers Assemble is the best big movie you’ll see all year.

It’s only 2 weeks (26th April!) until Marvel’s The Avengers (retitled for some weird reason to Avengers Assemble for Uk/Ireland release) and we’re edge-of-our-seats excited. So what better way to whet some of that appetite than 25 new stills from the movie. As we’ve already said, there are some minor spoilers.

Sidebar, there’s a distinct lack of Thor in these. Considering the only Thor picture here is the best one of the bunch, we’re kind of sad about that.

Everyone hates spoilers, right? I know I do. Spoiler-free reviews are difficult to come by these days, what with the internet being a free-for-all. I’ve have many great movies spoiled for me. The conversation usually goes like this:

Spoiler-person: “Have you seen [insert new movie] yet?”

Me: “No, not yet. Don’t tell me anything about it.”

SP: “I won’t. But what I will say is look out for [some situation] oh and the cameo from [famous actor]. You won’t see it coming.”

Me: “Thanks, dickhead.”

The ideal situation is you go watch this movie without prior knowledge of, well, anything. And this review isn’t going to spoil anything on you. Honestly. If you want a review that ruins everything, go read The Hollywood Reporter’s spoilerific one. Otherwise stay the hell away from that thing. I really don’t know what they were thinking by publishing it.

We’ve come to the belief that the movie started as a drunken idea. You know the ones that seem like “THE BEST IDEA, LIKE, EVER!!!”, except that this one actually was. The cast are universally excellent, with Whedonverse alumni standing particularly strong. Relative newcomer Kristen Connolly, who looks like the lovechild of Judy Greer, Ellie Kemper, Abby Elliot, and Kate Mara, is commanding in the lead role.

Producer/writer Joss Whedon called it a “loving hate letter” to the horror genre. And that’s essentially what it is. It takes everything you know about the genre, turns it on its head, reaches into its proverbial backpack, pulls out Mjölnir and smashes it into smithereens. What’s left is the smartest, funniest and most meta horror movie since 1996′s Scream.

Drew Goddard seems comfortable behind the camera, and has gleaned a lot of nuances from his mentor (we’re guessing) Joss Whedon. The script’s wit is stand-above-everything-else funny. It’s funnier than any comedy film I’ve seen in the last 2 years. Sidebar: for those unfamiliar with the director/writer Drew Goddard, he arrived on the set of Buffy and wrote Selfless. Yep. His first frickin’ episode was Selfless. Then he wrote for Angel, Alias and Lost. And then Cloverfield. Damn talented b**tard!

But that’s what is exactly clear about this film: the talent. It’s quite pathetic how diluted our horror genre has become. There’s no element of surprise anymore. Directors and writers are forcing themselves to  idolize complete and utter torture-porn gore (Human Centipede) to shock or surprise audiences. Not enough can be said for such profoundly original, hysterical and accomplished horror movie as this.
