Time for your weekly dose of Team RWBY courtesy of the guys over at Rooster Teeth.
Episode 3
So, and I won’t do this every week, but I’ve gotta comment again on those opening credits. Absolutely fantastic. Fits the tone of the show well, looks great and the music is awesome. Just a brilliant job done by all involved.Anyway (last time I’ll mention it, I promise!) on to the episode!
This week starts on a very lighthearted note and keeps that tone throughout much of the episode. Even the serious stuff is dotted with clever little quips here and there, something which has become synonymous with Rooster Teeth in general through both Red vs Blue and RWBY. This weeks’ customary awkward scene comes courtesy of Jaune, who struggles to ask Weiss out on a date, something which I’m sure everyone can relate to. The scene is clever and showcases the lighter side of the show well, after two episodes that were filled with an ominous undertone. This lighthearted tone continues through next scene, where Ruby and co. summarise their plan. This really is the serious stuff, for them at least, but again you can see the lighthearted nature of all of these characters. Their personalities compliment each other brilliantly and the chemistry between the voice actors is ideal. All this adds up to assured entertainment whenever those four are together. Just a side note, you can really tell that those involved with this really, really care about it. In the writing in particular, you can feel how much fun they’re having writing and you can hear it in the voice actors too. It’s really refreshing to see these guys and gals have this much fun and adds to the feelgood factor of the show.
Anyway, this episode focuses on Ruby and Weiss’s adventures and we’re given clues to a number of different plot lines. Ruby chases Penny, who was briefly introduced to us last volume but was shrouded in mystery, while Weiss goes off to get her hands on some documents. Weiss’s story here interested me a little more as we saw that she may not be all cuddly and happy families with her father, something unexpected considering how proud she seems of her lineage. While we’re being treated to some deepening of Weiss’ character, Ruby is off finding out more about Penny and giving us the platform to see Atlas’s military technology which looks pretty formidable. I’m certainly looking forward to a giant mech fighting Team RWBY at some point in the near future, Monty make it happen! After a short chase scene involving some guys from Atlas and Penny and Ruby, it’s finally confirmed that Penny is a robot. Not that big of a reveal considering she shot missiles out of her chest at the end of volume 1, kind of a dead giveaway of her robot-ness, but a pretty major revelation for Ruby and it’ll be interesting to see how she handles it. All in all another solid episode that builds on the good foundation they’ve already set. I can definitely feel them building to something, I’m just not sure what. I, for one, am sure as hell gonna stick around to find out.
Check back next week for more from Team RWBY, maybe we’ll see the whacky adventures of Yang and Neptune or Blake and Sun, who knows? You can check out this week’s episode here.
